Little Project

A little about me. I'm a graduate student currently finishing my thesis with hopes of graduating this December.

Here's the tough part about working on a thesis project. A lot of times, the student really doesn't have anyone to relate to. Everyone in their classes is always at a different point in their work. Some are working on their second thesis class, others have barely started the program, and there are even a few people who are taking an extra year before graduating to work on a project.

Night Owl

This blogging thing is getting addicting. Anywho, I've written something new. Guess that poetry thing is still kicking around in my head.

Oh, if only to sleep
An ever-elusive feat
Within the still of night.
Yet still I stay strong
Awake when it’s wrong
Until dawn brings with it first light.

This one comes with a dedication.

To my sister.

Because she'll get the joke in there better than anyone else :D

Prompt Contest of Epic Proportions!

Prompt Contest of Epic Proportions!

here's the link to the merry sisters of fate contest, hopefully now it works. I tried to get to work with my last post, but I'm new at this. I learn as I go :D

New Edit: I posted this originally sometime yesterday afternoon and now it's 4:19 a.m. central time. I was having problems with the whole linking thing, and go figure, a little poking around for help and I finally figure out how to get the link to work on my original contest post entry. I figure leaving this up won't make a difference. Just proof of the learning process in action ;)

Merry Sisters of Fate Contest

Okay, so my second post is going out on a limb, but I did say I was going to stop being anonymous. To prove my point, I've decided to try my hand at writing a poem to go with their current challenge.

The prompt is "The Princess and the Pea" by Edmund Dulac. Here's the image.

And now for my entry.

Lumps and bumps enough as is,
to notice the pea and someday be his.
It’s way too cold, and the blanket’s bare,
there are cobwebs above, dust motes in the air.
The pillow’s flat and the hangings smell,
I wonder if it’s worse in hell?
I’ve counted sheep and tried to relax,
I just can’t rest with that pea in my back.
Pray, let me sleep, I swear I’ll be good,
I promise to be patient and do as I should.
But if all that’s too much, just grant me this,
don’t let me greet the floor first with a kiss.
To roll and then fall, all while asleep,
With my luck I’ll break something if I land on my feet.
I guess the true test of a princess could always be higher…
Still, I would have hoped for a mattress just a little bit wider!

Once upon a time I used to write poetry. Here's hoping this works. I can't help feeling like I still want to tweak some lines, maybe add a few more. Oh well. If anything, they've inspired me to post these kinds of things occasionally as well.

Here's the link to the contest for others, but hurry, it ends tomorrow!

Starting out Small....sort of

So I've always been one of those anonymous followers of author blogs. I have a link in my bookmarks menu that leads specifically to about 15 author blogs that I check every 2 or 3 days. But today, I'm finally doing something different.

I've decided I will no longer be anonymous, meaning that I will not only start commenting on my favorite author blogs but I will also start writing my own.

I buy an average of ten books a month, mainly consisting of sequels I've been waiting for or debuts by buzzed about authors that I'm interested in checking out. I'm going to try posting reviews of all of them.

I may not gain any followers on this. I'll be lucky if my sister ever decides to stop by since she has a tendency to forget (you know you do :p). But the hope is to gain practice in writing. Everyone starts out somewhere. So this is where I'm starting.

Wish me luck.
