I actually thought this was really sweet. There were a few bits that didn't sit well with me but not enough to deter me from the book.
Not a fan of the big families that hound the single women in their midst with plans to get them married and then pairing that with the supposed all-knowing knowledge they claim to have that makes their suitor choice the right one no matter how much their victim protests. I know this still exists, I know it is based on so many reader's own realities but it still makes me feel peeved. I only read these stories knowing the lead is usually independent-minded enough to not only fight against these scenarios but they even manage to twist these intentions around to suit their own purpose.
Was also not a fan of the reveal about why our lead couple had been apart for so long. I felt horrible for Liam and Daisy for the time they missed out together, especially with the hints about who Liam was covering for in the situation that forced them apart originally. I got it the moment the word 'secret' came up in Liam's thoughts about who was involved. I don't want to mark this review for spoilers but for those of us who have read this already, it just bugged me that the other partner in crime, so to speak, allowed Daisy to hurt for so long when it all could have been, if not entirely forgiven then at least allowed to be a disappointment in her past rather than the heartbreak/betrayal she carried around with her for so long. When this kind of thing comes up in books, it always sticks in my head about how I think this one side character hiding the truth like this from the lead for no other reason than to keep themselves in a good light, it just seems like more of a betrayal than the stuff going on in the main plot. It happens, I know that, but I sometimes wish authors would show the side character working to make up for what they hid, just a little bit.
Still, I thought the banter was charming. The exchanges between Daisy and Liam made me smile and I was happy to watch their relationship unfold. Once Daisy's extended family backed off, I liked the ways the family supported each other. I thought the reveals between Liam and his family were poignant enough to make me feel for them. I wanted to see this book through to the end for the happily ever after and it felt like the ending the characters had earned. Overall, a sweet romance about a couple learning that they are the ones to choose their own worth and their own happy ending, together.
P.s. I've just realized that I have read these out of order and now I need to go back and read Layla's story in The Marriage Game. Good to know.
